Her soft brown eyes gazed imploringly at Sherry Perry.
"You've had enough," she said, gently pushing Lucky, the Palomino horse out of the way so 3-year-
old Grace could get a bite of the apple.
The red registered Arabian mix horse eagerly reached her head out to get a bite out of the juicy
green fruit.
It was just another day at the Triple L Horse Rescue Ranch in Brunswick, a non-profit public charity
that takes in unwanted horses, which could include abused, abandoned or neglected animals or
ones their owners could no longer take of.
"I've seen too many horses that have needed homes," Perry said, patting Grace on her head.
The ranch depends heavily on the generosity of the community and has found a new way to receive
the funds it desperately needs. It's aiming at the public's palate.
It's offering people an opportunity to purchase a cookbook to help Triple L Rescue continue its good
work.
In its pages are recipes not only for human consumption but animals as well. Try your hand at
making Pony Pizza or Kitty Yum Yums. There's even a recipe for hamster treats and, of course,
dogs arent forgotten in this must-have cookbook.
You aren't only getting delicious recipes but helping out the rescue ranch, with a 100 percent of the
proceeds going towards its operation.
The variety of over 300 recipes, from appetizers to desserts, come from all over the United States,
including Brunswick and the Golden Isles.
Perry placed some of her own recipes into the book, including ones for barbecue meatloaf and
molten chocolate cake.
Her friend, Gail Moody, also contributed recipes to the cause. Her favorite is the Coca Cola Salad,
which she says she has to make every Christmas.
Moody didn't hesitate to aid Perry on the cookbook endeavor.
"I told her I've got a bunch (of recipes)," Moody said.
She and her husband have adopted a rescue horse from the ranch, a silver Arabian horse called
Trooper.
"The horses need someone like Perry," said Moody, adding that the cookbook will assist in funding
many of the aspects of running a ranch.
She says plans are underway for more fundraising events.
A little mare called Grace is Perry's newest addition and needs a lot of help. Grace was born with a
cleft palate, an uncommon deformity that is a malformation of the soft and sometimes hard palate
where the left and right side fail to unite, forming a cleft, says Perry. When she the mare eats, some
of the food drips out of her nose.
The surgery to fix the soft cleft palate is very intricate and costly, about $10,000. The ranch has set
aside only $1,500 to date.
Perry is busy applying for grants and accepting donations to go towards Graces surgery.
Once the surgery is complete and Grace has healed completely, she will be ready for adoption.
"We need to get her surgery done and trained to ride before she can be placed in her forever
home," said Perry.
The rescue ranch has been open for nearly two years. Three horses have been rehabilitated and
adopted out to loving families. Three currently stay at the ranch while two more are at a friends
pasture.
"We provide equine rescue regardless of age or disability," Perry said. "We strive to give as many
as we can a second chance at life and being loved."
The horses are rehabilitated and placed in adoptive homes whenever possible.
"They deserve a happy life," Perry said, looking at Lucky and Grace graze in the pasture. "They eat
better than I do."
